100km* on a school night.

a few weeks ago, after following simon on twitter during his build up to release, i finally got my hands on a copy of his book: the 100 greatest cycling climbs (a road cyclist's guide to britain's hills).

this excellent little pocket-guide is exactly what it sounds, listing some real classics from around the country. you can read reviews elsewhere and even see many of the pages here. i like that the descriptions are brief but detailed enough to let you know what to expect. there are only so many ways to describe a road going upwards, but all credit to simon for making descriptions interesting enough to read even if you aren't familiar with the hill he's describing.

it seems that the most popular section of the book with the people who have commented on blogs and tweets, is the ispy section at the back where you can fill in when you rode each hill.

as with all top 100 lists, they'll never cover everyone's favourite. i knew many of the hills listed and was surprised at a couple of the exceptions (my favourite, the struggle from ambleside to kirkstone - the climb is included but from the other direction).

i was most surprised that the one hill included in my county of leicestershire was one i'd never heard of (or ridden). terrace hill in the vale of belvoir.

so tonight after work, i rode there for a look (and a ride up it of course). the 100km round trip was well worth it. i should have paid a little more attention to simon's description though as i approached the hill from the wrong end and rode down it first, spoiling the surprise a little.

i see why he included it though. short and sharpish, with a couple of sharp bends on it so you can't see the top. the climb gets a 1/10 in the book. bealach-na-ba in the highlands gets 11/10!

we are the battery human...

sunshine, flip-flops, rod brakes and stornoway. riding isn't all about lycra and light weight...

Where are we goin' this fine morning?
What are we doin' this fine day?
We're doin' the same as ev'ry morning!

We're stayin' inside on this fine morning.
Stayin' inside on this fine day.
We'll stare at a screen, like ev'ry morning.

And outside the window, spring is here,
And we're gonna hibernate all year.
Under a pile of a4 snowflakes.

Cause we're the new generation,
generation!
We are the battery human!

But we were born to be free range.
Free range.
Whoa.

We've got the whole world at our fingers.
We've got the whole world in our hands.
We get the blues as we grow richer.

Cause we need to fix out loose connection.
Out in natural World Wide Web.
Where humans evolved in three-dimention.

We were tuned in by natural selection.
And we need to go online each day.
But inside we don't get no reception.

So join the new revolution, revolution!
To free the battery human.

Cause we were born to be free range, free range!
Whoa.

We are the new generation,
generation!
We are the battery human!

But we were born to be free range, free range!

Whoa.

that birthday present in full...

birthday
as i hinted previously, yesterday was my birthday and Gosia surpassed even her own exceptionally high standards of imagination and thoughfulness with the surprises she had for me.
after a full-english, delivered to bed, she handed me a blue* envelope with 'where we are going' written on it.
(*the envelope colour becomes significant...)
inside were several a4 pictures of a city that i didn't recognise. one photo showed a completely bombed-out city, the next a sea-going ship in a harbour etc. it was obviously northern europe, but i didn't know where.

the second envelope (white) said 'how we get there'. inside were flight tickets from east midlands to a destination that had been scribbled out. my heart sank a little as i noticed that the dates were the same weekend as the tour de france starts. i was already thinking of having to find a bar in wherever we were going so i could watch it.

third envelope (red - i still hadn't worked this out) said 'where we're staying'. inside were details (in english) of an unnamed, but obviously continental hotel.

fourth envelope was yellow (things had by now fallen into place...) and said 'what we will do...'. inside were maps of the prologue time-trial route in rotterdam and the next day's stage from rotterdam to brussels.

then, out from under the bed was produced a musette full of t-shirts, key rings, teddies and general TdF memorabilia...

an absolutely brilliant present.
dzienkuje bratku!

love is my condition

inspired by andy's excellent work, i realised that the local icon that is old john has featured in many of my photos over the years.

i share his feelings about the place and many of the photos of it but i now live only a couple of miles from it and visit more often than ever...

it provided the start and finish point when i walked the leicestershire round, i ride up there quite often and have even slept there a couple of times this year.
when i'm out riding, or even travelling in the car, i recognise the hill's shape on the horizon and it is the sign that i am almost home.

not trying to make any particular point but it was time for a change.

gran fondo lambstrong

GF lamb
ever wondered what your twitter friends really looked like?
want to know if they used the best picture they had of themselves for their avatar?

or do you just fancy a ride with some nice people?

if you answered 'yes' (or even 'meh') to any of these questions, then YOU are invited to come and ride the first Gran Fondo Lambstrong.

it'll be a 110-ish km** social ride around the rolling countryside of leicestershire on sunday 29th august - that's bank holiday weekend.
the ride isn't a sportif or a race, just a social gathering to enjoy some good riding, good company and a beer and lunch afterwards.

the plan is this: we'll meet at the griffin inn in swithland where we'll be able to park up and (if i can arrange it) use the facilities.
we'll then ride out through the rolling countryside of england's smallest county, rutland and around england's largest man-made lake. we'll stop for coffee and a cake at the cafe on it shore (right next to rutland cycling) before heading back. there will be plenty of chances for more stops or to cut the ride short if you don't fancy the whole thing.

leicestershire was chosen for both its central location and because the hills shouldn't be too much for anyone.
we'll finish the ride back at the pub in time for their excellent sunday lunch. i'll book tables in advance once we know who is coming.

there will no entry fee, no marshalls, no support, no timing chips, no attitude. there will be decent food, stylish riding and sunshine*

get in touch if you fancy it.

ian (placid casual) and nick (springheel1970)

*no really, there will!
**the route may yet change...
